How to start in the Domain industry in 2008

itsadomain.jpg

When I started to invest in domain names, I did the typical mistake of going after TradeMarked domains, yes I did it too :) Many did that mistake so there is nothing to be ashamed of. But doing it over and over well that would be a problem.

I learned a lot by reading other people`s experience so the best you have to do is to gain more informations possible. Best of all , most of them are free. There are many Domain Forums around the web but only a few are the place to be:

www.namepros.com

www.dnforum.com

www.domainstate.com

www.mobility.mobi   (specialises in the .mobi domains)

www.acorndomains.co.uk (specialises in the UK domains)

Don`t be ashamed to make mistakes , just learn and move on.

Ask a lot of questions, individuate the successful domainers and learn from them, find a niche that you like and focus on just that one. Many newbies try to do to many things and it`s not really easy for expert domainers so the chances you have to succeed starting like that are rare.

Regarding how much money to invest in this industry it`s not the same answer for everyone but as general rule, you should be investing only the money that you can lose, because if you make a mistake , at least you don`t have major damages. Also, if you`re already achieved your first sale , don`t get too excited, 1 sale could be luck (luck plays a big role in domaining too) , so focus on why you sold that name and try to do the same over and over , DO NOT rush buying too many silly domains just because you already feel you are going to become rich! :)

  1. Hi Lorenzo,

I’m advaita over at NP - you’ve got a very useful looking blog for someone like me who is still very much learning about the domaining business. One thing I forgot to say is you have to ‘ping’ every time you make a post - after you make a new post go to http://pingoat.com/ scroll down to ‘get started’ and enter the details they ask for then scroll down and click on ‘Go’ - that lets the rest of the blogging community know that there is a new post on your blog. Apologies if you knew that already. Vic

    Hi,

A domain forum not on your list but should be is DomainState.com.

A lot of top domainers go there including Frank Schilling.
